Pigeon Shooting in South Africa
High-volume wingshooting on the sunflower plains of the Highveld.
Overview: A Wingshooter’s Fever Dream
Stand beneath a vast Highveld sky as it erupts with wings, rock pigeons and doves hurtling over golden sunflower fields, twisting, stooping, and flashing past at 80 miles an hour. Instinct takes over. Your shotgun rises. The first barrel barks. This is not a warm-up. This is Africa’s most electrifying wingshooting experience.
Welcome to the Highveld: where pigeons come in waves, the barrels run hot, and every moment in the field demands and rewards focus, rhythm, and grit.
The Birds

Rock Pigeon (Columba guinea)
Often called “the most challenging game bird on earth,” rock pigeons fly in high, fast, erratic waves. They decoy brilliantly, break hard, and require reflexes honed by experience.
Flight speed: Up to 80 mph
Shooting style: Field hides over crops and decoys
Volume: Expect up to 3 cases of shells per day

Ring-necked Dove (Streptopelia capicola)
Fast, agile, and abundant, these doves keep the action steady between pigeon flights and build your rhythm throughout the day.

Laughing Dove (Spilopelia senegalensis)
Smaller and less predictable, laughing doves add a flutter of finesse to the day’s shooting. Their swift, darting movements challenge even the most disciplined wingshooter.
No formal bag limits. Just honesty, accuracy, and respect for the birds.
